Summer in Central Massachusetts goes by fast. Between lake days, cookouts, and weekends on the Cape, most of us pick up more sun than we meant to. By November the tan is gone, and what’s left behind tends to be brown spots, a duller tone, and fine lines that didn’t seem as obvious back in May.
Fall is the best time of year to do something about it.
Our providers at Aponi Aesthetics see this every year once the weather turns. Below we walk through why the cooler months work so well for corrective skin treatments and which of our options are best suited to summer sun damage.
What Summer Sun Does to Your Skin
UV exposure pushes your skin to produce extra pigment, and over time it breaks down the collagen that keeps skin smooth and firm. Some of that damage shows up quickly as freckling or sunspots on the cheeks, nose, chest, and hands. The rest appears more gradually as rough texture, uneven tone, and lines that start to settle in.
Sunscreen helps prevent new damage. It won’t fade the spots you already have.
Why Fall Is the Right Time for Corrective Treatments
Lasers and peels work by resurfacing the damaged outer layers of skin so fresh, healthier skin can take their place. That new skin is especially sensitive to sunlight while it heals, which is why sun protection after treatment matters so much. Staying out of the sun in July is hard. Once the days get shorter and colder, you’re spending more time indoors, UV levels drop, and a few days of redness or peeling is much easier to plan around.
Starting now also gives you time. Several of these treatments work best as a series spaced weeks apart, so a plan that begins this fall can carry you through the winter and have your skin in good shape well before next summer.
Treatments We Offer for Sun Damage
CO2 Laser Resurfacing
Our CO2 laser resurfacing treatment uses the Helix CO2 by Cartessa, a fractional laser that targets sunspots, hyperpigmentation, and melasma along with fine lines and uneven texture. It is our most intensive option for sun damage.
There is real downtime. Most patients have redness and peeling for several days, and full recovery usually takes one to two weeks. That recovery window is a big reason CO2 fits so well into the fall and winter calendar.
UltraLase Resurfacing
If you want results with less time away from your routine, UltraLase resurfacing is a gentler laser designed to lighten pigment and even out skin tone. Mild redness typically lasts a day or two, and some light flaking may follow over the first week. Most people go right back to normal activities.
Some patients notice a difference after one visit, though we generally recommend a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart.
Chemical Peels
We offer several chemical peels at different strengths. The VI Peel is our strongest option and helps lift superficial pigment and soften fine lines. Expect some tightness for the first day or two, followed by peeling.
For a lighter approach, the Chrysalis Peel System is done once a week for four weeks and has minimal downtime. The ZO Stimulator Peel is our gentlest choice, a quick lunchtime peel with no downtime that leaves skin looking brighter right away.
After any peel you’ll need to avoid sun exposure for at least a week, which is far easier to manage in November than in the middle of summer.
Microneedling
Microneedling creates tiny, controlled channels in the skin that prompt your body’s natural collagen response. It’s a good fit for the rough texture and fine lines that sun exposure leaves behind, and it pairs well with other treatments as part of a seasonal plan.
We also offer radiofrequency microneedling, which adds heat energy to help tighten skin and improve texture and tone with little to no downtime.
How to Choose the Right Treatment
The best option for you depends on how much damage you’re seeing, your skin type, and how much downtime you can realistically take. Some patients prefer one more intensive CO2 treatment. Others would rather do a series of lighter peels or UltraLase sessions that fit around work and family plans.
A consultation is where we sort that out. Your provider will look at your skin, talk through your goals and history, and recommend a plan. Sometimes that plan combines more than one treatment.
Protecting Your Results Through the Winter
Results last longer when sun protection becomes a year round habit. Wear a broad spectrum SPF every day, including the gray New England days when it doesn’t feel necessary, since UV still reaches your skin through clouds and reflects off snow.
A consistent skincare routine helps too. We carry ZO Skin Health products, and your provider can suggest what to use at home between and after treatments.
