Once a patient receives a comprehensive consultation with one of our skincare professionals and IPL is recommended, patients are responsible for complying with our pre-treatment recommendations. These include:
- No sun exposure or tanning beds for at least two weeks prior to treatment
- No use of Retin A or other exfoliating acids
- No self-tanner
- No use of antibiotics that cause photosensitivity
What can I expect at the time of treatment?
Most patients are pre-treated with a topical numbing medication to provide the maximum amount of comfort during the procedure. The system is calibrated based on the appropriate settings for each patient, and the light energy is applied to the skin in a slow, rhythmic manner. Skin will feel like a mild sunburn post-op that can last up to 1-2 hours. Slight swelling or tenderness is rare but possible. For areas of pigmentation, the pigmented areas will appear darker before they appear lighter.
What areas of the body can be treated?
- Full face (or specific areas of the face)
- Chest / Back
Are there any side effects?
In rare cases, blistering or prolonged redness may occur, resulting in possible hyperpigmentation (brown/red discoloration) or hypopigmentation (skin lightening), which sometimes resolves within months, but may become permanent.
Avoid hot showers or hot showers for about 24 hours. Also, avoid topical acids, scrubs, or loofah sponges until the treated area has returned to its pre-treatment condition, about one week. Sun exposure or tanning beds should be avoided for about two weeks post-op, as the area treated will be more photosensitive. Sunscreen should be applied every day.
